Effective health and safety performance comes from the top; members of the board have both collective and individual responsibility for health and safety.

The purpose of Non-Executive Directors with regards to Health & Safety is to ensure good corporate governance. Both executive and non-executive directors owe the same duties to the company, even though the non-executive directors are far less involved in the running of company’s operations.

Non-executive directors will not have the day-to-day knowledge of the company’s business and will not see all the information available to management, which is why they must have the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to know how to effectively challenge the executive directors and offer independent judgment.

To often NED’s rely on the information offered by the Exec and Management teams, or on non-expert external audits which are not suitable or sufficient leading to false assurances around the H&S performance of the organisation. In our experience the majority of these false assurances come to light when it is too late.

As with the NED’s the Executive Team have the same responsibilities with a lot more management involvement.

 

Executive Directors are pivotal to the success of the organisations health and safety management system, very much the visible leaders that will convey the boards governance to the management team and beyond. All Executive Directors have the same responsibility to Health and Safety regardless if they are a Finance Director or an Operational Director.
